The requirement for Primary Healthcare has always been a major concern of many nations dating back many decades. For instance in Nigeria PHC facilities lack the capacity to provided essential health-care services, in addition to having issues such as poor staffing, inadequate equipment, poor distribution of health workers, poor quality of health-care services, poor condition of infrastructure, and lack of essential drugs. Other factors affecting the healthcare system performance include; inadequate facilities and structures, poor maintenance of human resources, poor motivation and remuneration, inadequate healthcare and financing, skewed economic and political relations, corruption, and illiteracy.

The essence for the PHC initiative is to take steps to tackle unacceptable

inequality in all countries.

In recent times, many developing nation of the world have faced the challenge of providing decent primary to their citizens. This problem led to the initiation of the 1978 international conference on primary health care held in Alma Ata. ( known as the “Alma Ata Declaration”) of which Nigeria is a signatory to, and became a core concept of the WHO’s goal of Health for all. The essence for the PHC initiative to include professionals and institutions, governments, and civil society, researchers, and grassroots group to take steps to tackle unacceptable inequality in all countries.

 

Although the Federal Government has put in place several initiatives for that purpose, the problem of healthcare remains inadequately addressed.

 

The provision of primary health care in the community, which is for people making an initial approach to a medical practitioner or clinic for advice or treatment, has continued to pose a major challenge for in the healthcare system. This situation has led to growing number of people unable to access health care in the country, which has adversely affected the underserved population.
